Miranda Wharam

Miranda is a qualified social worker with 30 years’ experience in social care, youth work, and community development. Her senior leadership roles within Sussex local authority included responsibility for a £12m budget and a workforce of 150 staff, alongside membership of the Emergency Resilience Team and the Child Death Overview Board. Since moving to the Highlands nearly a decade ago, Miranda has played a central role in local community development. She Chairs the Strathpeffer Community Development Trust and has led a range of initiatives, including Climate Challenge Fund projects focused on reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

Miranda has been a director of Highland Community Energy Society (HCES) since 2018 and became Chair in 2023. She is also a director of the Allt Dearg hydro site and has supported multiple community hydro share offers across the Highlands. Her focus is on ensuring that community‑owned renewable energy projects deliver meaningful, long‑term benefits, enhance environmental sustainability, and strengthen community wellbeing. She is passionate about inclusive governance and ensuring that members and residents have a genuine voice in shaping the future of their communities.
