The Mission...

At Energy4All we have a two-fold mission: to support the UK’s transition to a low carbon energy system, and to give communities the tools to shape this transition in a way that will suit and benefit them.

What do we do?

Put very simply: we help communities to set up and manage their own renewable energy co-operatives. These groups own a renewable energy asset like solar panels or wind turbines, they generate clean electricity which is then sold to:

Combat climate change

Earn the co-op members a fair return on their investment

Generate profit which can be channelled back into the community

Develop the co-operative, and eventually support other renewable energy co-ops across the UK

The Energy4All Model

We work with communities that want to develop co-operatively owned renewable energy.  We help those communities develop a successful business case, and support projects through planning applications. Energy4All then helps the communities raise funds through public share and bond offers, brings the technical expertise to build projects to time and budget, and then manages their continued operation.

Once built and operational those new co-operatives become share holder members of Energy4All and support the development of more community energy projects through their membership, just as those that went before them.

We currently support more than 30 co-operatives, spanning all major renewable energy technologies. Several of the coops are award winning, and Energy4All itself has won the Community Energy England award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Energy and the Ashden Award as a Climate Champion.

If you have a project in mind that you want to discuss with us, have a look through the 'Work With Us' menu to learn a little more about our process and then get in touch.

A brief history...

  • 1996

    1996

The Baywind Co-operative is formed, the UK's first community wind farm co-operative. Baywind raised £2 million in a share offer in 1997, and purchased 6 wind turbines on Harlock Hill and Haverigg near Ulverston, Cumbria.

    2002

Following the success of Baywind, their 1200+ members enthusiastically support the creation of Energy4All, to help other communities in the UK achieve similar results.

Energy4All embark on their first shared-ownership project, Boyndie Wind Farm Co-operative on the north coast of Aberdeenshire. This is the first of 7 shared ownership projects completed in partnership with Falck Renewables Ltd (later Renantis and then Nadara Ltd), reaching as far as the Isle of Skye. Shared ownership projects give communities a partial share in a much bigger development.

Westmill Wind Farm also join the Energy4All family, the first 100% community-owned wind farm (commissioned in 2008) to be built in the south of England.

Energy Prospects is set up by Energy4All, a distinct co-operative which doesn't have electricity-generating capacity but instead helps to finance the early development of other community energy projects across the UK.

    2011-2015

The Energy4All family grows to incorporate rooftop and ground-mount solar PV projects, hydropower projects, and a sustainable wood heat project. Projects are spread across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. In 2015 Energy4All reaches the milestone of 20 projects.
