As part of the UK’s target towards producing more green energy for a net zero future, a competitive tender process for the delivery of the next generation of offshore wind energy will soon be underway for the Celtic Sea, off Southwest England & Wales.

Energy4All have 25 years of experience in growing and fostering community energy cooperatives. Working in collaboration with offshore wind developers, Renantis (formerly Falck Renewables) and BlueFloat Energy, we are working to design what community ownership of offshore wind farms might look like in the future. We’d like to gauge the opinion of the people of Wales and Southwest England on community ownership of offshore wind farms.

"Community ownership" is a term that can have various meanings and connotations depending on the context in which it is used. It generally refers to the ownership and control of assets, resources, or organizations by a community or group of individuals who have a shared interest or stake in those assets.

In this context, Community Ownership is: When individuals decide to work together by choice to collectively develop renewable energy projects, where decisions are made democratically, and ownership is shared, all with the aim of meeting their mutual goals for cleaner green energy, environmental protection and benefit to the local community.

There are many examples of community owned renewable energy schemes across the UK. Often in the form of a Community Benefit Society, Cooperative or Community Interest Company.  Some examples of community benefits that are often built into the heart of these organisations are: grant funding for local community projects, cheaper electricity for members & local area, access to energy efficiency knowledge and installation. Each scheme is different but they are all designed by and voted for by the members.

This questionnaire is the initial step to design what community ownership of offshore floating wind farms could look like in then future.
